The world’s former tallest buildings, the Petronas Twin Towers were partially shrouded by clouds last night. I tuned the camera’s white balance towards blue and it ended up looking like a scene from the fictional and stylised Gotham City.
A bright prime lens allows an impromptu night shot like this without a tripod. Of course, the Olympus OM-D’s 5-axis image stabilisation was working its magic too. The PanaLeica Summilux lens is extremely sharp even wide open at f1.4.
The cityscape comes alive when the roads are wet and reflective. Most cameras can take a little drizzle and it is the best time for night photography. You can take shelter but some raindrops will still get onto your glass when you point it upwards. Use a UV filter and stand by a tissue or cloth to dab at intervals.
During the rain tonight, I chose the Panasonic 7-14mm lens so as to take in the Twin Towers from close range. The ultrawide lens has a very big front element and no filter thread. As such, I didn’t want to wipe the bare glass as much. I just worked the droplets into the scene for added realism.
Kuala Lumpur is a picturesque city surrounded by hills, especially when when viewed from higher grounds. It is in a valley after all. You have seen my previous pics of KL’s skyline from the hills of Cheras and Ampang. This time; a view from the opposite side. This was photographed near the forbidden Sivan Temple on top of Bukit Gasing, Petaling Jaya.
