It is an artform itself. The Japanese calls it &#8216;Sampuru&#8217; which is a cute corruption of the English word &#8216;Sample&#8217;. I suppose it is popular because in many places, tourists wouldn&#8217;t try anything from the menu unless they can see a replica.
