Today, a new flagship mirrorless system camera from Olympus will debut. The new OM-D EM-1 inherits the classic design of the EM-5 with some distinct improvements. I have had the camera a couple of weeks earlier; and here’s my initial hands-on report in 17 pages.<\/p>\n

I have owned and used Olympus system cameras from the E-1 (year 2003), E3, E-520, E-5, through to the E-P1, E-PL2, E-PL5 and my current favourite, the OM-D EM-5. Regular readers here will know, I use the OM-D EM-5 on a daily basis, in almost every conceivable situations and environment. As I write this, my EM-5’s LCD screen has cracked and the mode dial malfunctioning possibly due to the extreme situations I put it through. I hope to put the EM-1 through the same vigorous real world use and will report accordingly.<\/p>\n

This is not a technical or scientific review. It is more to introduce you to the new features and to share my thoughts as an existing EM-5 user. Here, you will find some new and exclusive pictures of the EM-1 and sample pictures photographed with the EM-1 itself.<\/p>\n

Briefly: the camera has a new 16.0 megapixel sensor, new powerful TruePic VII engine, dual AF detection, ultra-large high res VF, improved I.S., time lapse, focus peaking, full Wi-Fi remote control and even a flash PC sync socket. Video specs remains almost the same as the EM-5 with improvements coming from the new processor and better I.S. While that may be understandably disappointing to some, it is nothing to scoff at.<\/p>\n

The bad ass cousin comes home. The (USD 7000) Four Thirds 300mm f2.8 prime lens finally gets to tango with its petite cousin, the EM-1, for the first time. A little awkward but they dance in sync straight away. One of the headline features of the new EM-1 is the Dual Contrast AF and On-Chip Phase Detection AF. The latter allows the older Four Third lenses (designed for mirror cameras) to focus almost as fast as the m43 lenses on the EM-1.<\/p>\n

Continuous AF tracking works fine when paired with the monstrous 300mm but I didn’t get to compare it to a rival system to gauge its acquisition speed or tracking accuracy. Stand alone, it works great on regular moving subjects. I haven’t had much luck finding birds in flight to test, though. The weather was awful (low light) during the time I had the camera. I did try it with the m43 75-300 mm and it focused faster than on the EM-5.<\/p>\n

Since AF now works faster with Four Third lenses, will I go out with my battery of dusty Four Third lenses?<\/p>\n

Will I use the Zuiko Four Third lenses more since it focuses faster with the EM-1 body? The excellent 12-60mm and 11-22mm Zuiko zooms are regarded as ‘prime lenses’ by many users. The 50 mm f2 is considered a legendary macro and portrait lens.<\/p>\n

I probably won’t be using them outdoors or for travel. The reason I like the EM-5 so much is because of its compact size. And I have also grown accustomed to the matching lightweight m43 lenses. I rarely attach the optional battery grip except when I am doing time lapse. I might use the bigger and heavier 43 lenses in the studio, though.<\/p>\n

It is officially confirmed that there will be NO new Four Third lenses or standalone bodies. According to Olympus, the EM-1 is the most elegant solution after thinking long and hard. They acknowledged that there is a large base of Four Third lens owners and figured this is the best move, moving forward.<\/p>\n

According to Olympus, the new TruePic VII processor stores a database of all Zuiko lenses and it can apply in-camera C.A. (chromatic aberration) and other software corrections automatically. This feature will not work with Panasonic and third party lenses.<\/p>\n

\nThere is a new function known as the Colour Creator. This feature allows in-camera adjustment of hue and colour saturation. You can also adjust the tonal curves similarly.<\/p>\n

Need some moonlight seeping into your bedroom? No problem. Press a button and adjust the hue to suit. Olympus OM-D EM-1, ISO 640, f4.5, 1\/50 sec with the Zuiko 12-60 mm lens.<\/p><\/div>\n

Like you, my first reaction was why would I want to mess with colour adjustments in-camera, when I can do it later with Photoshop or other software on my PC? Still, I wouldn’t knock the feature just yet. I hated those Art Filters at first, but it kind of grows on you.<\/p>\n

\nI love those Olympus’ Art Filters, especially the Dramatic Tone Filter. It helps liven up a dull day or when the light is flat during mid-day. The TruePic VII processing engine seems to handle the art filtering of the image better. There appears to be less random dark blotches on clouds and less graininess.<\/p>\n

OM-D E-M1’s new HDR (High Dynamic Range) Shooting Mode will fire and bracket four shots in rapid succession with a single shutter press. The images are then aligned,\u00a0 merged and processed automatically, in camera. As such, no tripod is necessary and it will work hand-held as shown below. There is also an extended mode which can bracket in 12 EV range.<\/p>\n

\nLive Bulb \band Live Time is not a exactly new feature as it is found in recent Olympus models. For the EM-1, one can operate the function remotely via Wi-Fi. Its usefulness and uniqueness is under-recognised, somewhat.<\/p>\n

You rotate the Mode Dial to M and drop the shutter to beyond B and Live Time is activated. With the first click, the image starts forming on the LCD and you visually gauge whether exposure is enough while watching it shape up live. Click a second time to end the exposure when you are satisfied. Live Bulb\/Time is great for long exposures during Light Painting and Fireworks.<\/p>\n

Interesting to note that the EXIF reports the extended low ISO as ISO 100. I wasn’t given the manual or specs at the time, and had no idea how low it went until examining the info.
\nTreat it like a digital neutral density when you need to drop the shutter speed or open up the aperture. It is not a true base ISO but a virtual one.<\/p>\n

The top shutter speed of 1\/8000th in the OM-D EM-1 is useful when you need it, but keep in mind you will need good light or the ISO will need to go up too. When shooting such subjects, you probably want to fire in continuous 10 frames per second mode. The good thing is that the EM-1’s buffer is now higher, allowing a burst of 40 continuous raw shots at 10 fps before it slows down to catch up. Actual numbers, of course, depends on the speed of your SD card.<\/p>\n

Over the years I have used a E-3, E-5 and EM-5 to cover the annual Rainforest 4WD Challenge held during the monsoons. It is rated as one of the ten toughest motor races in the world. The Olympus cameras and lenses have never failed me in heavy torrential rain, mud slides and floods.<\/p>\n

The same 12-60 mm lens I am using for both the test shots here fell into the river with the E-3 body a few years back. By the time, I climb back down from the cliff to recover it, it was lying submerged for at least a good two minutes. Suffering some initial optical viewfinder fogging, it dried out to work as normal for several years more. When Olympus states a body and lens combo is weather resistant, I know they mean it.<\/p>\n

In a recent session with the EM-5 under heavy rain, the play function stopped working. It recovered by itself after it dried out. See the thunderstorm picture here<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nA new zoom lens, the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 12-40mm f2.8 PRO, will debut at the same time as the OM-D E-M1. The lens like the body is dustproof and splashproof. Breaking with Olympus tradition, it comes with a lens hood in the box (not optional). An Olympus executive explained that is because “all professional lenses comes with a hood”. This is the only lens in that category now. The lens has a filter diameter of 62mm.<\/p>\n

Olympus states that by using new control algorithms, image stabilization at low shutter speeds is more effective than on the E-M5. Here is a sample shot at 1\/25 second, hand held. I didn’t get to try the Wi-FI remote control shooting as the updated Android version was not available at the time I collected the camera. There is more to it than downloading, uploading and sharing of images to social media.<\/p>\n

The remote function has also been improved from the E-P5 with the various shooting modes (P, A, S, M, iAUTO) now available. Users can now wirelessly adjust various settings such as the shutter speed, aperture value, and exposure compensation from a smartphone or tablet. Monitoring the Live View wirelessly and shooting via Touch Shutter mean endless possibilities.<\/p>\n

I am imagining walking around the studio adjusting the lights, as I look at its effect through the screen of a tablet or smartphone in my hand.<\/p>\n

Many of the handling issues ironically originates from the fact that I have grown accustomed to the layout of the EM-5. Thus if you are thinking of using either camera as a second or backup unit, it might actually be counter-productive, at least initially.<\/p>\n

I hate the new four way-dial most. It requires pushing with the finger nails to move the pointer, for example. Thankfully, some of the navigation can also be done with the dials in combination with SCP. The play button is now in a more sensible location but the re-location of the Info and Menu buttons can be frustrating too for a EM-5 user. On the bright side, the buttons are bigger and the frustratingly small power switch of the EM-5 has been relocated to the top left hand corner.<\/p>\n

The other thing I hated, or could not get used to initially, was the bottom right corner pushing uncomfortably against the palm, when cusped in the right hand. Installing the optional power battery holder and grip strap may help here. Nevertheless, all the little niggles are forgiven, when you look into the big, bright and gorgeous viewfinder!<\/p>\n

By the way, great news for EM-5 users upgrading or getting a second body. Both models share the same battery. Also, before I return the camera, I reset it. The handy SCP or Super Control Panel is now, sensibly, a factory default. Olympus do listen to feedback \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

1. The highest-ever Olympus image quality due to a new 16.3 megapixel LiveMOS sensor and new TruePic VII image processor.Image quality is determined by three components: the lens, imaging sensor, and image processor. To realize the best image quality, advancement of all of these elements as well as attention to detail must be achieved.<\/p>\n

a) The new 16.3 megapixel Live MOS sensor that makes On-chip Phase Detection AF
\npossible 37 points Phase detection AF sensor was placed on the imaging sensor surface, and a new 16.0 megapixel Live MOS sensor was included to make DUAL FAST AF possible. The Live MOS sensor and new TruePic VII image processor, improves on decolorization that tended to occur at high sensitivities, as well as providing excellent image quality that has less noise than previous models.<\/p>\n

b) New TruePic VII image processor. The Olympus-original image processing technology Fine Detail has evolved into Fine Detail II for proper correction of magnification chromatic aberration that differs depending on each lens’s movement, and applies the appropriate sharpness processing according to the lens type and aperture value for natural, high-quality resolution. The E-M1 is also equipped with moire-removing processing equivalent to that of a low-pass filter, which helps reduce compression artifacts that tend to occur during sudden scene changes when recording a movie.<\/p>\n

c) New high-performance lens groups M.ZUIKO PRO and Four Thirds standard. The M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 12-40mm f2.8 PRO, which is scheduled for release at the same time as the OLYMPUS OM-D E-M1, is the first model in the new M.ZUIKO PRO category and features dustproof and waterproof performance, toughness, excellent image quality, and high performance.<\/p>\n

Additionally, DUAL FAST AF mentioned later in this document makes it possible to fully utilize the high-performance Four Thirds System standard lens group that possesses
\nsurpassing image quality.<\/p>\n

2. The high-speed, high-precision DUAL FAST AF using both Contrast AF and On-chip
\nPhase Detection AF. The newly-developed DUAL FAST AF is an Olympus-original AF system that selects the optimum method depending on the lens and settings; either On-chip Phase Detection AF or Contrast detection AF.<\/p>\n

a) 37 point On-chip Phase Detection AF 37 AF targets are located in the On-chip Phase Detection AF method. This enables automatic selection when a Four Thirds System compliant lens optimally designed for Phase Detection AF is attached, and achieves greater precision than the E-5 especially with a bright f2.0 lens, and speed that rivals the Olympus DSLR E-5. Both Small Target, which is excellent for focusing on minute AF points, and Group Target AF which is highly applicable for various situations can be selected.<\/p>\n

b) 81 point Contrast detection AF. When a lens is attached that conforms to the Micro Four Thirds standard, the Contrast AF method is automatically selected. While inheriting the fast and accurate AF system of the PEN and OM-D series, AF points have been expanded from 35 to 81. Out of these 81 points, 37 of them are in the same position as Phase Detection AF. In addition to Small Target and Group Target, Super Spot AF can be selected. This enables selection of an even smaller AF point area where pinpoint AF is possible for accurate focusing on very small subjects. This is particularly helpful for specifying a focus location in a small area such as during macro shooting.<\/p>\n

c) Combined usage of On-chip Phase Detection AF and Contrast detection AF. When a lens that conforms to the Micro Four Thirds standard is attached and C-AF is selected for subject tracking and continuous AF, On-chip Phase Detection AF and Contrast detection AF are used together. This results in significant improvement of C-AF tracking performance over traditional mirrorless models, with a maximum sequential shooting

A new EVF system equipped with the latest features that rivals that of full-frame SLR models in both screen size and enhancement of creativity The built-in electronic viewfinder (EVF) has also advanced significantly, for DSLR shooting style that is only available on an OM-D. The E-M1 features a 0.74x (35mm conversion) viewfinder magnification factor that rivals full frame DSLR cameras. The extremely high-resolution 2.36 million dot LCD panel provides a large, clear view that is the equal of optical viewfinders (OVF). With a display time lag of 0.029 seconds, tracking of moving subjects is completely natural. This new Olympus EVF system equipped with many of the latest functions allows users to check what finished images will look like simply by looking through the viewfinder.<\/p>\n

a) The adaptive brightness technology. This feature raises the brightness when shooting in bright outdoor conditions, and lowers the brightness in dark indoor conditions, reducing visual errors from light and dark adaptation of the eye. The backlight brightness is automatically adjusted in response to changes in ambient lighting to maintain the proper brightness, and by drawing closer to a view available from OVFs, the EVF provides an environment for easy shooting simulation.<\/p>\n

b) LVF Expanded Dynamic Range offering new possibilities for EVF. The HDR shooting mode which automatically generates a single image with an expanded dynamic range from 4 sequentially shot images provides an expanded dynamic range Live View display when shooting. This feature offers new EVF viewfinder possibilities.<\/p>\n

c) New function: Color Creator. This feature does not just adjust the hue and color saturation, but allows users to enjoy creating original images that are imbued with their own feeling by actively producing colors. Creative Color is a new creative tool born of a designer’s sensitivity. Fine-tune adjustment of hue and color saturation combinations are available with hue adjustment in 30 steps, and color saturation adjustment in 8 steps including the base line. Color manipulation that was previously difficult to imagine is now possible by following your intuition while using the intuitive GUI and Live View screen.<\/p>\n

4. In-body 5-Axis Image Stabilization that removes all types of camera shakes The 5-Axis Image Stabilization compensates for the shutter speed by 4 steps correcting camera shake that occurs in all shooting situations from still images to movies. By using new control algorithms, image stabilization at low shutter speeds is more effective than
\non the E-M5.<\/p>\n

a) In-body image stabilization. Among 5-axis camera shake, rolling (optical axis rotation) blur cannot be compensated for on the lens’s image stabilization. A merit of in-body image stabilization is that it can compensate for camera shake with all lenses, including Four Thirds, Micro Four Thirds, and older lenses.<\/p>\n

b) IS-AUTO for optimum panning shot. The E-M1 is equipped with IS-AUTO, which automatically detects the camera’s movement, and optimally controls correction depending on the direction of correction, including vertical, horizontal, and angular directions in panning shot. This is not only effective for straight line directions, but also effective for movement in a curved line direction.<\/p>\n

c) Checking compensation in the viewfinder. Not only can users check the image stabilization effects in the Live View screen, but they can also check in the same way on the viewfinder. With the stable viewfinder image, accurate framing and focusing is possible even during telephoto or macro shooting.<\/p>\n

d) Multi-Motion IS. With a combination of 5-axis image stabilization and Multi-Motion IS, powerful image stabilization is available when shooting movies. With traditional image stabilization, correction of slow, strong camera shake that occurs when walking or breathing was difficult, however, Multi-Motion IS is an effective image stabilization mode specifically for movies.<\/p>\n

1. Small and light body. High performance and ultra-large EVF viewfinder that surpass DSLR cameras are included on a compact, lightweight body that could not be found on a DSLR. When combined with the compact ZUIKO lens system, comfortable shooting is available anytime and anywhere.<\/p>\n

2. 1\/8000 sec high-speed shutter and sequential shooting performance With the 1\/8000 sec. high-speed shutter, quick-moving sports shooting is possible, and the maximum aperture value can be enjoyed even under bright daylight conditions. The high depictive performance of the ZUIKO lens system draws out the very best and most appealing aspects of scenes.<\/p>\n

Additionally, high-speed sequential shooting is available with a maximum frame when using auto focus tracking of 6.5 fps for approximately 50 shots in RAW (continuous shooting time of approx. 8 sec). The traditional shooting method in the horizontal position offered only Top and Bottom Blur Effect (Diorama I), but now Left and Right Blur Effect (Diorama II) is available. Not only is Top and Bottom Blur Effect available for vertical shooting, but because Olympus’s Diorama effect gradually strengthens blurring at the focus point of origin, not only can the Diorama effect be enjoyed, but this feature can be used to shoot portraits with a shallow depth of field. Diorama is also newly added to Art Effects and can be used for top and bottom, and left and right blur effects. With a total of 8 Art Effects and a rich variation of Frame Effects, users will never run out of options.<\/p>\n

b) PHOTO STORY has the ability to add multiple viewpoints to a single scene PHOTO STORY, which lets users shoot a normal, everyday scene from multiple viewpoints feature the new theme, Speed. 7. HDR shooting and Hand-Held Starlight. The E-M1 is equipped with HDR Shooting for 2 different patterns of automatic merging in the camera. With a single press of the shutter button, 4 images with differing exposures are captured and automatically merged into a single HDR image. Artistic HDR images are easy to capture when the HDR Bracketing mode, made possible by the wide 12 EV range, is set.
