A Smile Is Still A Smile In Any Colour

Sometimes, you don’t need words but a simple smile. Although I am using the SLR-shaped OM-D, I try to use the LCD screen instead of peering into the viewfinder. Since the camera is quite light, I hold it like a compact camera in situations such as these. That way, the subject can see my face and smile back 🙂

The Nine Emperor Gods Festival is one of the most colourful Chinese festivals. As such, few people attempt black and white shots. Next time you are there, try some alternative shots in native black and white (if your camera supports this mode) or desaturate the colours later.

Many shutterbugs go to a street event acting like a stalker or paparazzi. Armed with a long lens, they mistakenly believe that ambushed shots of startled people are candids. They’re not. You are not covering a war zone or disaster area.

I prefer to do street photography in a non-predatory manner. I talk to people. By engaging your subjects, they feel more at ease when you photograph them. If someone is not comfortable, you move on. Don’t steal and publish a shot knowing that the person is not willing. The Nine Emperor Gods Festival is a happy occasion and your pictures should reflect that.

This roast chestnut (buah berangan) hawker was telling me how he got kicked out of Chinatown and how he now survives by selling his stuff once a year to regulars. He was so engrossed with his story that he didn’t even pause to see the spectacular dragon prancing behind. You can see the enthusiasm in his eyes.

It Never Rains In Southern Ampang

It never rains In Southern Ampang. It pours, man, it pours… Without fail, it will rain every year, throughout the nine-day Nine Emperor Gods Festival in Ampang. Rain is good for photography. Dark skies, fire, smoke present dramatic subjects for the lens.

When you shoot giant joss sticks, try to include a human figure so that the viewer can get a sense of scale or size. Similarly, see how I included spectators together with the stilt walkers in the previous pic.

Title inspired by one of my favourite Albert Hammond songs.
