Nine Emperor Gods Festival 2012

The annual Nine Emperor Gods Festival in Ampang will begin tomorrow. The 9-day festival is steep in Chinese mythology and Taoist rituals, making it a must-visit event for any photography enthusiast. On the eve tonight, devotees, lion-dance troupes and stilt-walkers marched to a nearby river to receive the deities.

Try to avoid firing the flash, if you can. A dose of direct flash will wash out the colours and kill the atmosphere. But then, without flash in dim ambient light, the auto-ISO will shoot up, noise will creep in and there will be slight blur of fast moving objects. But that is OK. The important thing is capturing the dynamism of the scene and the lighting as your eye saw it. Over the next few posts, I’ll share with you other tips on photographing this fascnating event.

The Nine Emperor Gods Have Landed

The Gods Have Landed In Ampang

The annual Nine Emperor Gods Festival begins today. The deities arrived last night by boat and was escorted to the Ampang Temple with a street procession. Here’s a short photo essay with a few photography tips…

Young Worshippers

Young Worshippers

Kids, ultra-wide angle lens and the black & white filter always work well.  For the wide angle to be effective, get down and stick the camera close. Of course, ask the parent’s permission before you do that.

Guarding The Throne

Unlike those Buckingham Palace Guards, these two young chaps get distracted easily. Who can blame them. See next pic

Divide And Drool

Divide And Drool

The standard attire for female worshippers, the hot pants, are getting shorter each year. Here, I used the pillar as a visual metaphor.

Smoke-Free Room

Smoke-Free Room

With so much smoke from the joss sticks, I was crying non-stop. Found this little refuge to wipe my tears but several photographers (who recognised me) came crying for a different reason.

They asked me why their pictures were full of raindrops even it wasn’t even raining! The answer is simple. Their flash captured those tiny ash particles floating in the air. Don’t use flash, young grasshoppers.

Reserved Parking

To my embarrassment, I quickly found out I was sitting on the gods’ official parking bays. After the deities disembarked inside the temple, the chariots are parked here for the next nine days.

The Olympus camera’s white balance can be so accurate that a scene can become clinical white (cold). After stepping into the altar area, I did a manual white balance to add a bit of bias towards red. It helped retain the warm atmosphere within.

The Black Duckling

The Black Duckling

Black in a sea of white makes an interesting visual counter-point. To get better pics, you need to kneel too. Get down to the worshippers’ level for a more interesting POV.

Nine Emeperor Gods Festival – Part 2

I have been photographing the Nine Emperor Gods Festival for a long time and this year is particularly challenging. With this new blog, I am displaying pictures captured in  wide-screen (16:9) ratio. The newer format requires a liitle more effort when composing but when framed properly; the images are unique and tell the story differently.

Deep Devotion

Deep Devotion

Some subjects lend itself to the wide format. The extra space allows the inclusion of the peripheral activities while keeping the main subject tight.

Dragons Into The Sunset

Dragons Into The Sunset

Although traditionally it has always rained during the festival, the sun was very intense today. Dialing down the exposure created the silhouette effect of the dancing dragon.

A Warm Feeling

A Warm Feeling

The dusk sky was a spectacular orange but I needed to get the colours into the faces as well. The solution was to swivel the external flash head and bounced it off a red cloth hanging behind me.

No Place Is Sacred Anymore

No Place Is Sacred Anymore

Earlier in the day, a scuffle broke out between rival lion dance troupes. Profanities and fists flew freely.

Babes Chimp, Too

Babes Chimp, Too

Chimping is the act of lowering the camera from the eye and checking the LCD screen after every shot. Nothing wrong with this digital age habit. I come from the film days where I sometimes don’t see the results for days until the rolls are processed. Since old habits die hard, I seldom check and just fire away.

Backstage

Backstage

Backstage at the opera, it was a bitter-sweet moment. The same opera has performed since I was a kid and many of the performers have retired or are retiring soon. The wide  viewpoint was tricky behind the scenes but turned out to be visually effective and powerful.
