No Smoking

Can’t miss the reminder when it is painted on the road. Jonker Walk is the tourist epicentre of Malacca, designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. This is a side road with food hawkers operating on weekend nights.

A trishaw pedals through the streets of the historical city of Malacca. Almost everything is like what it was some 400 years ago. The signature red buildings of the then Dutch administrators and the narrow roads, all evoking a romantic throwback to its glorious past.

I said almost everything because the tricycles now have AC power sockets at the back, in case tourists need to charge their camera phones. It is also used to power guady neon lights and a noisy boom box.

The Malay/Indonesian word of becha (now spelled as beca) originated from the Fujian (Hokkien) word “Beh Chia” meaning horse-drawn carriage.
