I asked my friends to hold their phones around this lemon-mint drink at Lameeya. By carefully positioning the LED light from the three phones, I lit the drink as how I would in a studio. Of course in a studio, I can use a variety of light shapers, snoots and diffusers. Here with an impromptu shot at the restaurant, I used paper napkins as diffusers and my palm as a light cutter.

The takeaway here? Light is light. Once you understand how it paints your subject, you can turn the plain into something beautiful. Anywhere.

Many Malaysian food stalls serve fruit juice in mugs similar in size to the mass krug or siedel used during Ocktoberfest. They are 1 litre or 34 ounce glasses. Some stalls even have gallon glasses for customers with a bladder of the camel. While some German Octoberfest waitresses can carry 6 mugs of beer in each hand, here Carmen struggles with a single watermelon drink.

Photography Tip: Push your wide angle lens close to the subject (the mug, in this case) to exaggerate size. Take advantage of a wide angle lens’ characteristic perspective distortion and deep depth-of-field for a dramatic or fun effect. Contrary to popular belief, the wide angle lens is not just for stepping further and taking everything in. It shines when you dare stick it close.

Bull Drink

I was strolling around the Ramadan food bazaar when a Red Bull sign at a drink stall caught my eye. I said “Betul ke?” (Really?). The smiling hawker quickly scooped me a cup to try. He said “no charge” as I was examining the charging bulls logo. Inside my mind, I was thinking ‘bull’ but he is such a nice guy and the drink tasted quite good.

With his permission, I started photographing the ‘energy drink’ from inside the giant tumbler. He asked if I was worried the camera may slip and fall into the liquid. I said no as the camera is water-resistant. He replied he is not worried too, as his cost is quite low. Aha!  Confession time. He uses an imitation cordial that comes in a big bottle.
