MAHA 2012

The first thing you see on sale at MAHA International 2012 is not fruits nor vegetables. It is umbrellas. Even with the incessant rain, the biennial Malaysia Agriculture, Horticulture and Agro-Tourism Expo is attracting thousands of visitors daily. The show is at the massive 386-acre MAEPS (Malaysia Agro Exhibition Park Serdang). Catch it before it ends on 2nd December.

The Good Ship Logos

Subliminal Cross?

Subliminal Cross?

On the way to the Cruise Centre, I saw what I thought was a scarecrow at a crossing. Turned out to be the back of a cardboard traffic warden 🙂

The MV Logos Hope at Pulau Indah

The MV Logos Hope at Pulau Indah

Currently docked at the Port Klang Cruise Centre until 26th Oct, the Logos Hope is a floating book fair with over 6,000 titles, all available for purchase. Its last port of call was Penang and the next stop will be Kuching.

Flying the Malta Valletta flag, this ship is 132.50 metres in length and can carry around 500 passengers. Operated by GBA Ships,  the Logos Hope replaces the earlier missionary ship MV Doulos, which I visited many years ago. On one of its final voyages, the Doulos was reportedly attacked by Abu Sayyaf militants. In 1988, she ran aground in Argentina and was replaced by another vessel named Logos II.

The GBA ships have opened its gangways to over 140 millions visitors in 160 countries & territories since 1970. The crew is made up mostly of young volunteers from 45 nations.

The Floating Book Shop

There are over 6,000 titles available, including books for education, career interests, self-help, personal growth and Christian literature, of course. Before the advent of the mega bookstores in Malaysia, such ships were a major draw for many Malaysian readers. Without Amazon and the Internet, it was the only source for good books. Poor us, then.

Porthole Pastry

Porthole Pastry

How could I resist taking a picture of this cake lit by the romantic glow of portholes? Wished they were round instead of square though. I kinda missed the old ship where visitors could roam the deck and many parts of the ship almost freely. Maybe I was a kid then. Now, the casual visitor is confined to just the book shelves and the cafeteria.

Getting there:
After visiting the Big Bad Wolf Sale in Serdang, head back to the Seremban-KL Highway and turn into the KESAS Highway at Sri Petaling. Drive straight till the end of the highway (towards West Port) and cross the bridge into the island of Pulau Indah. Look out for the turning on the right to the Glenn Cruise Terminal. It’ll be an adventure!

The Big Bad Wolf In A Big Bad Orchard

"I'm gonna eat you..."

"I'm gonna eat you..."

The world’s biggest book sale is taking place at the world’s biggest tropical fruit orchard. The venue, MAEPS, is located within the picturesque MARDI agriculture research park. Fruit trees, vegetable plots and ponds make up the landscape of this giant green gem.

The location may be remote but bookworms are invading The Big Bad Hall by the thousands. Some of the titles I wanted were already gone when I got there on Monday. Don’t worry. There are still plenty of good books available at bargain prices and the big bad wolf won’t harm you. He just wants to eat your credit card 🙂

Did a watercolour painting of the landscape. Photoshop bibles are on sale there too.
