Night Near The Museum

Last night, I was driving towards the royal town of Sri Menanti when heavy rain, thunder and lightning hit the valley. It was as if Mother Nature was saying; fireworks are lame. She put up a spectacular show, shooting multiple bolts in a 360 degree pattern. The pitch dark sky was beautifully lit with the simultaneous strikes.

I quickly set up a tripod under a bus stop at the turning to the palace and museum. The bolts were mainly of the random intracloud (cloud-to-cloud) type and thus were unpredictable in its direction. Needing something to juxtapose, I decided to hand hold the camera and walked into the rain. As a result, I got this shot that not only captured the burst but pin-pointed the location too.

Warning: Outdoor lightning photography is very dangerous. Before attempting, read up and understand the risks and safety measures to adopt.

Cake Shop Boys

In tiny Kuala Klawang town, two boys wait for their father to go for basketball practice. I was speaking to their father who operates the only cake shop in town. The Raleigh bicycle in front of the shop belonged to the boys’ late grandfather.

What started as a Hainanese chicken rice shop 60 years ago, is now turned into the only cake shop in town. Mr Tan specialises in wedding cakes that somehow became popular with the local Orang Asli (aboriginal) people.

I like the natural and coincidental ‘Color Splash’ effect that is akin to the small town movie, Pleasantville. Everything else in the scene was already near colourless when I photographed it. I only had to remove a dash of red from the car tail light at the top right edge and a little rust on the drain cover.

A Chapel In Titi

Gothic architecture in a storm. Mysterious and stoic. The Chapel of Saint Augustine in Titi. Could not find a single person around to ask about the history of this quaint and beautiful church in the remote Jelebu valley.
