After visiting Perting Dam, it was time to chill at famous Kow Po ice-cream parlour in Bentong town. When I pointed the camera at this little girl in the shop, she paused for me to click. She is the six-year-old granddaughter of the lady selling nasi lemak outside.

The man behind agreed she is really cheerful, helping the family when business is brisk and having fun at the same time. He is from the neighbouring town of Raub and he too recommended a few places to explore. I love a random road trip with no itinerary or schedule.

Emerging from the rainforest (see previous pic), I met policeman Rashpal Singh on the streets of Bentong. We had a very interesting chat about life in a small town. I asked him for recommendations for nearby off-the-beaten-track places to explore and the friendly cop pointed me to a very interesting location. Coming up in the next picture.

Backstage At The Opera

Guess what? Backstage at the Chinese opera is like a typical family outing nowadays. Everyone was busy with their phones and no one was talking or looking at one another. This Taiwanese actor is one of several performers joining the troupe this year. The Hokkien Opera, a fascinating component of the Nine Emperor Gods Festival is underrated and under-appreciated.

Remember what I said about making friends while taking pictures on the street? I met several members of the opera while walking with the parade on the first day. They invited me backstage for an intimate look and an explanation of their roles.

For this portrait in the dim dressing area, I used the Pana-Leica Summilux 25mm f1.4 lens. A Manfrotto ML240 LED Panel was mounted above the OM-D to create the catchlights in the eyes. The fine lens captured some light from the phone screen as well.
