The Jaga

It is amazing how clear the sky is over the ‘rice bowl’ of Selangor stretching from Kuala Selangor to Sekinchan. It is amazing because the padi fields are set ablaze for replanting after harvesting.

Seeing the beautiful blue skies amidst the burning fields makes me wonder if the age-old practice contributed to the haze problem we are currently facing. I’ll be moving closer to the fire for a special look.

A statue of Shā Wùjìng (nicknamed Sandy or Buffalo) stands guard outside a Chinese temple in the area. The mythical character is from Journey To The West, one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature.

Batu Arang

Batu Arang was once a bustling coal mining town that rivalled Newcastle. Apart from feeding steam locomotives of its era, the plentiful coal meant fuel for a brick kiln. That too has closed and what remains today is a chimney and ruins overgrown by the jungle.

Around the sleepy hollow, there are some tell-tale signs of its glorious past. Many wooden houses in the surrounding villages spot an unusual patchwork of red bricks. It was as if there was one final warehouse sale of bricks and every resident grabbed some.

This kid running for her school bus provided a little visual counterpoint to the sedentary landscape.
