The Majapahit Empire extended to Malacca during its13th century heyday. Not sure if its decline was due to decadence like what happened with the Roman Empire.
Gula Melaka or palm sugar is widely used in local desserts. This cake from Delicious Cafe is aptly named Gula Melaka Decadence. Sweet, sweet indulgence photographed with the 60mm Macro lens.

Many like taking food photos from top down. Some prefer a side view. Which is better? Top or bottom? Depends on the subject but most of the time it is a matter of personal taste.
As you may have noticed, I usually shoot food from an angle lower than 45 degree to near parallel. That way the dish appears more 3-dimensional and you see its texture better. A diagonal angle will appear more natural since it is closer to a seated diner’s POV.
If the layout or presentation is nice, it is worth exploring from the top. Some dishes, table surface or cutlery (when combined) lend itself to an overhead view.
At Nadeje Melaka Mille Crepe’s, the table top was a nice glossy black. The outdoor seating area also had nice diffused sunlight coming in. That allowed a clean and minimalist look. I framed the picture with the OM-D’s AMOLED screen tilted up.

My favourite cake is Delicious Restaurant’s “Coconut Cake with Fresh Coconut Filling covered with Hawaiian Coconut Shavings”, It tastes really awesome but I like it for another reason.
I like how it makes me think about shapes, colours, textures and translucency, looking at it each time. Any cake that makes a man think before biting into it, is a good cake 🙂
A single colour-temperature calibrated ML-360 light was placed diagonally across the dining table. I didn’t have to desaturate or adjust the colours later. It is a “black and white” image photographed in colour.
